Budzar Maryna, Kovaliov Yevhen Epistolary dialogue of Hryhorii Galagan and Osyp BodianskyiSection: Publication of Documents Abstract: The purpose of the work is to introduce into scientific circulation the letters exchanged between the historian Osyp Bodianskyi and public figure Hryhorii Galagan, as well as to contextualize the ideological, social and personal motives of their correspondence. The methodology of the article is a discursive analysis of these epistolary materials for deepening the understanding of the essence of communication processes in Ukrainian public and intellectual circles in the socio-cultural framework of the middle of the 19th century. The scientific novelty of the article lies in the publication of the correspondence of H. Galagan with O. Bodianskyi as a complete epistolary complex. A contextual study of these important historical sources proves that the end of the 1840s and the first half of the 1850s despite unfavorable political circumstances (the ultra-conservative regime in the Russian Empire at the end of the reign of Nicholas I) was a time of intense communication between Ukrainian patriots included in networks of multilateral mutual assistance, and they used the liberalization at the beginning of the reign of Alexander II, in particular the loosening of censorship restrictions, to activate the national cultural movement. Conclusions. The beginning of H. Galagan’s correspondence with O. Bodianskyi dates back to 1847—1848, when the foreign and internal policy of the government of the Russian Empire took on extremely reactionary features, and the last letters date from 1857, a time of relative liberalization of social and political life. The content analysis of the epistolary testified that the political reaction did not manage to completely suppress unofficial public life in Ukraine. The letters illustrate the forms of socio-cultural interaction that Ukrainian patriots resorted to, from the informal communication of like-minded people to the search and purchase of texts on the history, ethnography, and folkloristics of Ukraine. The Ukrainian language was a full-fledged means of expressing awide range of opinions, regarding both the discussion of social and political problems, and the solution of a number of private issues. Ukrainian language was used quite often by Bodianskyi and sometimes by Galagan. This proves that Ukrainian has acquired the status of afull-fledged literary language, able to fully satisfy the communicative needs of society. The publication of a set of letters by Osyp Bodianskyi and Hryhorii Galagan enables a thorough understanding of the hitherto little-researched period of the history of Naddniprianska Ukraine, the end of the 1840s — the middle of the 1850s, the transition period between the Cyril and Methodius Society and the beginning of the Hromadas movement.
