Restoration of phonograms from collection of rare records of Department of Music Fonds of V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine: digitization, digital restoration, creation of metadata, integration into international music web resources

Abstract: The purpose of the article is to consider the theoretical and practical features of digitizing and restoring phonograms from rare media, namely the collection of gramophone shellac records from the fonds of the V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine — an important component of the cultural heritage of Ukraine, creating descriptive information for sound recordings in the form of metadata, providing free access to digital materials online, as well as integrating them into international music web resources. The research methodology is based on the application of a complex of methods of systemic, audiovisual, chronological, informational analysis, methods of compiling metadata, bibliography, book studies, and musicology. The scientific novelty consists in expanding access to the collection of musical recordings stored in the department of music fonds of the National Library of Ukraine, through individual analysis of the physical condition of shellac records to select the optimal technical approach to digitization, digital restoration of the received phonograms, their preservation and creation of descriptive information in the form of metadata on the basis of a comprehensive scientific processing of sources in accordance with the National Library of Ukraine data sets and international resources. Conclusions. An experimental study was carried out on the digitization and restoration of phonograms from the collection of rare records from the fonds of the National Library of Ukraine. The features of digital processing of audio recordings were considered. It was noted that digitization of the collection of rare phonograms and creation of backup copies allows optimizing and improving access to musical heritage, ensuring its preservation in case of loss or damage to the originals. Audiovisual documents, in particular shellac records, have a number of features regarding the storage of descriptive information to them, which affects the expansion of the data set for storing metadata and their further usein automated systems. The produced digital copies of audio recordings and the stored metadata are the basis for the creation of specialized musical information resources, in particular the resource “Shellac Records from the V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine Fond”, to which other digital materials can be added: copies of photographs, audio and video recordings, other graphic materials, as well as text information in electronic form, which will greatly facilitate the comprehensive search, distribution and use of information about musical cultural heritage, in particular the playback of audio recordings online.
