Open Science and development of research infrastructures in field of book and archival heritage in Ukraine and Europe

Abstract: The goal of the research. The article aims to analyze the development of research infrastructures (RIs) in the field of book and archival heritage in Ukraine and Europe, with particular attention to the implementation of Open Science principles. The study focuses on how interoperability standards, metadata harmonization, and digital preservation policies contribute to the integration of Ukrainian infrastructures into the European research ecosystem. Methodology. The research applies a comparative approach to evaluate European RIs such as DARIAH, CLARIN, Europeana, and OPERAS, alongside Ukrainian practices. Discourse analysis of policy documents, standards (TEI, EAD, METS/MODS, MARC 21, Dublin Core), and protocols (OAI-PMH, IIIF) is used to identify commonalities and divergences. The case study methodis applied to the V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine to illustrate the adoption of interoperability mechanisms. Scientific novelty. The article provides a comprehensive overview of the epistemic shift from traditional archives and libraries to dynamic research infrastructures in the humanities. It demonstrates how European practices can serve as benchmarks for Ukraine and highlights the role of FAIR principles and UNESCO’s Recommendation on Open Science in shaping cultural heritage research. Conclusions. Ukrainian integration into the European RI landscape requires balancing domestic needs with international standards. The adoption of OAI-PMH and other interoperability protocols by the V.I. Vernadskyi National Library of Ukraine exemplifies progress in aligning with global infrastructures. At the same time, challenges remain in terms of sustainability, digital preservation, and multilingual accessibility. Strengthening these areas will enable Ukraine to position its cultural heritage within a broader European and global context.
