Abstract: The period of the 20-s that constitutes an important stage in the development of the national publishing industry is studied in the paper. In particular, the social-historical and cultural situation is under review. The principal constituents of the process of Ukrainization of the publishing business, the contents and the target readership of the Ukrainian book of the period are ascertained.
