From the archives of diaspora: Kyiv journal

Section: Studies in Special Historical Disciplines

Abstract: The article provides a research into the history of creation and contents of the Kyiv journal, a literature and art journal of the Ukrainian diaspora, which was published in Philadelphia (U.S.) during fifteen years (1950–1964) and covered Ukrainian life in the English speaking world. The journal publishing statistics is given. The author defines four factors, which provided for the creation, formation and popularity of the edition: the first one is the example of multiple Ukrainian editions existence in Germany and Austria in the second half of the 1940s; the second one is gathering of a large number of famous writers and actors in Philadelphia; the third one is Kyiv journal becoming the first Ukrainian “thick” journal in the U.S.; the fourth one is the self-sacrificing activity of Bohdan Romanenchuk, an editor and publisher of the journal. Brief biography of life and creative work of B. Romanenchuk is presented. The journal contents, history, authors, editors, publishers and journalists are characterized.
