Visualization of the metaphor of "Church Year" in art decoration of Venets Khrystov by Antoniy Radyvylovskyi

Section: Studies of Archival and Book Collections

Abstract: The aim of the work is to explore the system of the Venets Khrystov by Antoniy Radyvylovskyi art decoration in the context of Baroque aesthetics and the tradition of homiletic editions decoration in the book culture of the 17th century. The methodology of the research is based on a structural and semiotic approach to the analysis of the art decoration system in sermon books for Sunday church services, conducted during the church year. This approach allows to reveal the method of metaphorizing the content of a book with the help of verbal and graphic means inherent in Baroque aesthetics. Comparative analysis of structure and illustration principles of the Evangel Uchytelne 1637, Mech Dukhovnyi 1666 by Lazar Baranovych and Venets Khrystov 1688 by Antoniy Radyvylovskyi, edited in Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra printing house, gave an opportunity to demonstrate the semantics changes of the same illustrations, depending on their role in a book structure. Science novelty. Consideration of the system of decoration of the Venets Khrystov 1688 by Antoniy Radyvylovskyi in the context of the development of the tradition of illustrating collections of sermons for the Gospel readings for all year reveals the little-studied bibliological aspect of the influence of the Baroque style on the Ukrainian book culture of the 17th century. Conclusions. The Venets Khrystov by Antoniy Radyvylovskyi traces the transformation of already formed traditions of decorating collections of sermons for the services of the church year in accordance with the requirements of Baroque aesthetics in the Ukrainian typography of the 17th century. The cycle of 53 narrative engravings used in the text part of the Venets Khrysrov, most of which had previously illustrated the church sermon and homiletics collections of the Kyiv-Pechersk Lavra printing house, acquires metaphorical meaning. The capacious, structured image of a rose crown, "woven" from the iconic plots of the Gospel history, represents the annual circle of church services in the form of a grateful gift presented to the Savior for his feat. Simultaneously represented in graphics (engraved title leaf and cycle of headpiece engravings) and verbal levels (text of prefaces), the wreath image in the structure of Antoniy Radyvylovskyi's collection became a "visual metaphor" of a church year. The artistic device of metaphorical meaning of well-known art images innovation was actively used in Ukrainian oldprinted editions decoration. This device is one of the features of Baroque style influence on the Ukrainian book culture of the 17–18th centuries.
