Ethnographic activities of Cabinet of National Minorities during 1920–1930 (based on archival records)

Section: Studies in Spesial Historical Disciplines

Abstract: The goal of the article is to consider the studies conducted by the Cabinet of National Minorities during 1929–1930, which remained in the shadow for too long.Within a short time, its members managed to organize a comprehensive study of different ethnic communities in Ukraine, in particular, the Jews, Poles, Czechs, Albanians and Greeks. The records have been preserved in a special fund (No. 7) of Archives Scientific Collections of Manuscripts and Phonorecordings of M. Rylskyi Institute for Art Studies, Folklore and Ethnology. Methodology. The present research is based on the principles of objectivity and historicism. The author applied such general scientific approaches as analysis and synthesis (while working with archival records), comparative-historical method, method of reconstruction etc. Scientific novelty. Nowadays there are numbers of researches devoted to activities of state authorities, cultural and educational institutions in the period of so-called “ndigenization” policy (1920–1930). However, the materials of the Cabinet of National Minorities, that was set up at the Ethnographic Commission of All-Ukrainian Academy of Science (1929), still have been ignored by the scientists. The author was the first to analyze the studies of traditional culture of the Romanies, Czechs, Poles and Russians as well. The article reveals the organizational activities on engaging scientists to provide studies of national minorities in Ukraine on a voluntary basis. The activities of ethnic groups on implementing the mother tongue teaching at schools are also described. Conclusions. In the current context of globalization, urbanization and democratic transformations in our country, it is important to research all the aspects of culture of ethnic communities for ensuring integration of civil society, achieving peace and harmony between all ethnic groups. The historiography of culture of national minorities enables to show long traditions of peaceful coexistence of Ukrainians and other ethnic groups, tolerant attitude towards local specifics of cultural and social peculiarities of any region.

Keywords: Cabinet of National Minorities, “indigenization” policy, the Poles, Greeks, Czechs, everyday life, culture, identity.
