Volyn handwritten Tesluhiv Apostol of 1593–1594: codicological and paleographic research

Section: Codicology and Codicography

Abstract: Our work aims to research the Tesluhiv Apostol manuscript of 1593–1594 (V. H. Korolenko Kharkiv State Scientific Library, Department of Manuscripts, rkp. 819172) using an electronic copy. The original manuscript is not available for study due to Russia's war against Ukraine. The tasks of the research are codicological, paleographic and orthographic attribution and archeographic description of the monument. Methodology. Source science, codicological, to obtaining the latest meta data. Scientific novelty. For the first time, the handwritten Tesluhiv Apostol of 1593–1594 was studied. Historiographical, codicological and paleographical study and archeographic description were carried out. It was established that the manuscript is a direct copy from the Apostle of 1525, printed by Francysk Skaryna. It has been proven that it was copied from the Church Slavonic manuscript of the Ukrainian edition, which was made from the Skaryna’s edition according to the usual orthographic rules of the Volyn book-writing school of the last quarter of the 16th century; the use of South Slavic orthograms is considered. Illustrations of the text of the manuscript are published for the first time. Conclusions. In Ukrainian literature from the second half of the 16th century, lists from the printed editions of the books of the Bible by Francysk Skaryna are gaining popularity. The Tesluhiv Apostle belongs to the Ukrainian manuscript Skaryniana. It was written in Volyn in 1593–1594 by priest Hermohen (Yermogen or Yarmogen, nicknamed Tikhonenia Yatskovich) in the town of Tesluhiv. Written in the Church Slavonic language of the Ukrainian edition, semi-statutory script, decorated with a simple folk ornament, with the stylization of Ukrainian embroidery. The Tesluhiv Apostol text was not directly copied from the printed Apostle of 1525 by Francysk Skaryna, but was copied from an already Ukrainized list and has attributing South Slavic orthograms. The monument needs in-depth codicological, paleographical, filigree, textological and linguistic research.

Keywords: Ukrainian handwritten Tesluhiv Apostol 1593–1594, printed Apostol 1525 by Francysk Skaryna, Volyn written book tradition, codicological and paleographical and orthographic features.
