New evidence on activity of binderу of Mykhailo Sliozka in light of bibliopegistic research

Section: Codicology and Codicography

Abstract: The aim of the work. The work most fully explored the kind of decoration, placementschemes of embossing and constituent design elements of primary bookbindingon the Słiozka old printed books made in his bindery and which can be considered aspredecessors of publishing binding on Ukrainian lands. The research methodology involvesthe use, in addition to the statistical, comparative, empirical methods, also theinvolvement of special methods of bibliology and bibliopegy. The complex use of thesemethods makes it possible to set the time and place of creation of a particular monumentin the absence of archival sources. Scientific novelty. For the first time, a detailed visual,technical-constructive and iconographic study of the decoration of primary bindings onSliozka’s old printed books was made. For the first time, a prepared album of rubbing ofthe embossing tools (centre-pieces, corners, small stamps) used by bookbinders in thedecoration of the workshop bindings was arranged. А description of the plots of centrepiecesand corners was given, which will be useful in attributing plots on newly discoveredbindings. To attribute Sliozka’s bindings (determination of their primacy), in additionto proprietary and related records, were used the methods of codicology, bibliopegyand iconography. This allowed not only to localize the place of manufactures of bindingson Sliozka’s publications copies, but also to specify the time of their creation, narrowingit up to several years after printing the text. Conclusions. Based on the research out, itcan be argued that the place of production of the discovered and researched bindingson Sliozka’s editions is his bindery started at the printing house. It can be assumed that inbindings decoration, in addition to the centre-pieces end corners, which were cut by themasters of the printing house, bookbinders used another tool (for example, rolls), whichwas bought at fairs, as evidenced by the images on them.

Keywords: bibliopegy, Sliozka printing house, decoration of leather bindings of the17th century, attribution, iconography and typology of the plots.
